Zircon - Species Overview

(Zirconium Silicate · ZrSiO₄)

Zircon is the oldest known minerals on Earth, with some crystals dating back over 4.4 billion years. It is prized for its exceptional brilliance, high dispersion (fire), and wide range of natural colors. Zircon is a natural gemstone—not to be confused with cubic zirconia—and remains one of the most visually striking and underrated gems in the jewelry world.

Origins

Zircon forms in igneous and metamorphic environments and is found in gem‑quality deposits around the world. Notable sources include:

  • Cambodia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Tanzania
  • Australia
  • Myanmar
  • Madagascar

Each locality produces its own palette, from warm honey and cinnamon tones to vivid blues and soft pastels.

Synthetics & Treatments
  • Synthetic zircon is not produced for the jewelry market.
  • All zircon offered by Mossy Duck Gems is natural, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
  • Heat treatment is common and used to produce blue zircon or lighten brown material.
  • Zircon is not typically diffusion‑treated or coated.

Durability & Wearability

  • Hardness: 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale
  • Good toughness, though stones should be protected from hard knocks
  • High refractive index for exceptional sparkle
  • Strong dispersion, giving fiery flashes of color
  • Suitable for rings, pendants, earrings, and statement cuts

Zircon’s brilliance and fire make it an excellent natural alternative to diamond in certain cuts.

Common Colors

  • Blue — typically heat‑treated
  • Honey / Champagne — warm natural tones
  • Cinnamon — rich reddish‑brown hues
  • White — bright, diamond‑like brilliance
  • Green — rare, often naturally occurring

Key Optical Features

  • High dispersion — strong fire
  • Double refraction — visible doubling of facets in some stones
  • Strong brilliance due to high refractive index

Care Notes

  • Avoid hard impacts due to cleavage and brittleness
  • Store separately to prevent scratching softer gems
  • Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush
